Finding a Personal Coach: It’s Not Just About Credentials
by Gary Rohrmayer
I was asked recently, “How do you find a good coach?” After giving it some thought, here are a few helpful ideas as you consider hiring a coach to help you reach the next level in your career, ministry, or leadership.
Selecting a personal coach is one of the most pivotal decisions a person can make when pursuing growth, whether in leadership, career, health, or personal development. A great coach doesn’t just offer advice; they create an environment that draws out your best thinking, action, and resilience. But with so many coaches available, how do you make a wise and confident choice?
The process begins with self-reflection. Before seeking a coach, clarify what you want to achieve. Are you aiming for a career transition? Do you want to become a more effective leader? Are you looking for personal balance or spiritual growth? Understanding your goals will help you find a coach whose expertise matches your aspirations.
Next, focus on alignment and specialization. Not every good coach is good for every client. Look for a coach who specializes in the area you want to develop. If you seek leadership coaching, for instance, a life coach without organizational experience might not be the best fit. Additionally, values matter. Especially for personal, faith-based, or transformational coaching, shared values and worldview can strengthen the trust and rapport that coaching requires.
Experience and credentials are also key factors. While not all great coaches hold formal certifications, many pursue professional training through organizations such as the International Coaching Federation (ICF) or specialized academies. Ask about their training, real-life experience, and coaching philosophy. Testimonials or referrals from trusted friends can offer valuable insights into their real-world impact.
One of the most important steps is the discovery conversation. Most reputable coaches offer a free or low-cost initial session. Use this opportunity to assess not only the coach’s approach but also the chemistry between you. Notice how you feel: Do you sense genuine curiosity from them? Do their questions spark new insights? A coach’s ability to listen deeply, challenge you kindly, and create a safe yet motivating space is more important than their resume alone.
During this call, please also explore the practical details. Understand their coaching structure—session length, frequency, communication methods, confidentiality policies, and fees. Transparent, professional logistics build a foundation for a healthy coaching relationship.
Finally, trust your instincts. Beyond logic and lists, your intuition is a powerful guide. Choose a coach who doesn’t just impress you but ignites you—someone whose presence challenges you to dream bigger, think deeper, and act with greater courage.
Choosing a personal coach is not about finding a perfect person; it’s about finding the right partner for your season of growth. Done thoughtfully, selecting a coach can become the first step toward breakthroughs you never thought possible.
Remember: Coaching is not a shortcut around hard work—it is an accelerator of focused, transformational work. Choose wisely, commit fully, and prepare to be surprised by your own potential.
